Meal Prep 101 for Beginners

If you are researching meal prep 101 for beginners, then you have come to the right place! Some people choose to prep their meals to reduce the amount of time they spend in the kitchen, while others choose to prep their meals to help them eat healthier. Regardless of the reasons why, meal prepping is simple and can be done in three simple steps!

  1. Invest in some high quality meal prep containers. You can choose the glass variety or Tupperware, but if you will be reheating your food in these containers, you should choose ones that are BPA free. If you plan to prep for more than one or two days in a row, look for containers that are roughly the same size, so they can be easily stacked together in the fridge.
  2. Before you can begin to “prep”, you must plan! If you are new to meal prepping, don’t overwhelm yourself! It is a big task to prep meals for an entire week, and it can be a struggle. Newbies should stick to prepping a few days at a time until they become more familiar with the process. When it comes to meal prep for beginners, it is super important to have a meal plan. There is no use in going to the grocery store and buying random items if you don’t have a cohesive plan for using them. You should write down each meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and snack that you plan to eat, and then break this list down into a list of needed ingredients and how much of each ingredient you’ll need to last you 2-4 days.
  1. Now it’s time to start prepping! After you have made your lists and made the trip to the grocery store, it’s time to begin the actual prepping. Remember to keep variety at the forefront of the foods you prepare, so you won’t become bored eating the same foods day after day. Flavor is an excellent component to experiment with. For example, try creating homemade marinades or dressings to dress up your lean proteins. Incorporating variety into your meal plan can also be as simple as switching up your proteins (i.e. swapping fish for chicken) every couple of days.

Meal prepping will require some adjusting to get used to, but remember to do what is comfortable for you and what suits your lifestyle. Even a little bit of prep is better than none at all!
